Abstract

Urban spaces, as a constituent of the socio-cultural environment, play a vital role in shaping local historical consciousness. They reflect historical processes, preserve collective memory, and influence the perception of the past among city residents. The study of the relationship between the urban environment and historical consciousness is particularly relevant in the context of modern urbanization and globalizing shifts. The aim of the article is to substantiate the role of urban spaces in forming local historical consciousness through their symbolic, cultural, and memorial functions. The study employs theoretical methods, including analysis, synthesis, abstraction, induction, and deduction, to examine the link between urban space and historical consciousness. Empirical methods, specifically observation and description, are used to investigate the structure and functions of urban spaces and to determine their impact on collective memory. An integrated approach facilitated the identification of mechanisms through which historical perceptions are formed within the urban environment. As a result of the study, the key approaches to understanding urban space as a carrier of historical memory have been revealed. The socio-cultural approach defines the city as an environment for the formation of collective ideas about the past. The symbolic approach emphasizes the role of signs and symbols in consolidating historical meanings, while the memorial approach views urban space as a system of "sites of memory" (lieux de mémoire). The core mechanisms of symbolic historical representation—including toponymic, monumental, architectural, and socio-commemorative ones—have been identified. It has been established that the historic city center, functional zoning, and the transportation network influence the formation of local historical consciousness through the constant interaction of residents with spatial markers of memory. The conclusions state that urban spaces are essential factors in shaping local historical consciousness, as they ensure the preservation of cultural memory and facilitate the comprehension of historical experience. Preserving the historically significant urban environment is a necessary condition for maintaining local identity and cultural heritage.
