Sources on the Development of Transport Routes in the Taurida Governorate (1864-1914)

Abstract

This article attempts to analyse the identified body of sources discovered during heuristic work in various archival institutions and library collections. The study is grounded on the principles of historicism, scholarly objectivity, and a systemic and comprehensive approach. Problem-chronological, descriptive, and heuristic methods were applied in the research process.

The study of transport routes makes it possible to analyse the economic, social, and cultural life of the region, to identify priority directions of development, and to assess their influence on both domestic and foreign policy. The value of these sources lies in the fact that most of them were found in the holdings of the State Archive of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea prior to 2014. Since access to these collections has been lost, they have acquired even greater significance.

The involvement and analysis of additional sources have made it possible to broaden the range of materials introduced into scholarly circulation and to identify certain patterns in the development and functioning of the transport routes network of the Taurida Governorate.

Having analyzed the entire array of sources, it can be argued that the construction of railways, highways and other roads was uneven and had different chronological frameworks. Construction on the peninsula was more lively than on the mainland. The Zemstvo reform gave impetus to the development of the transport industry. Although the key factors remained the military and economic factors, the development of ports and the rise of international trade.

Although some sources provide only a fragmented understanding of the processes of designing, constructing, and operating the land-based road infrastructure, the research process remains ongoing and continues to explore various aspects of the outlined problem.
