The purpose of the research is to determine the possibilities of using historical consciousness in the education system to form the foundations of national-patriotic education of citizens capable of performing professional duties. The possibility of national-patriotic education of students of higher education institutions using Ukraine's historical past has been determined. Emphasis is placed on the urgent need to preserve the national identity of the Ukrainian people in the context of armed and information aggression. The fate of repressed educators in Kharkiv in the first third of the 20th century is used as a vivid example of the risks to national identity posed by occupation, as the aggressor, by destroying historical and cultural heritage, attempts to destroy historical memory.
It has been established that the development of national-patriotic education requires the unification of all stakeholders in the educational process: teachers, students, the state, society and employers. Each participant in the educational process puts forward their own requirements for the national and civic competence of specialists. Through regulatory documents, the state creates a comprehensive basis for the use of history in the education of citizens. Teachers and higher education institutions should actively involve in the educational process (either explicitly or in the form of a hidden curriculum) topics related to national patriotic education, the affirmation of Ukrainian national and civic identity, prepare future specialists and, above all, future historians to popularise and teach history, including controversial issues, using critical thinking and information and communication technologies, which is becoming increasingly relevant in countering information warfare.
The research contributes to the development of educational practices aimed at strengthening national identity and digital civic responsibility.
