Abstract

The article examines the scientific achievements of Poltava scientists who studied the history and activities of the Vasil Krychevsky Poltava Local Lore Museum. The authors set the goal of analyzing and classifying the works of scientists and highlighting underdeveloped topics that require further study.

The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, scientificity, and systematicity. A complex of general scientific (description, analysis, generalization) and special methods was used. Among the latter, we distinguish: bibliographic heuristics – used to establish the degree of development of the problem under study; historical-typological – used to classify scientific works; historical-genetic – used to show the evolution of scientific studies; historical-comparative – used to compare the development of problematic issues at different stages.

The authors conclude that the mass of works dedicated to the Poltava Museum of Local Lore can be divided into two categories: publications of a general nature and specialized studies. Publications that comprehensively consider the activities of the museum are represented by annual reports, guidebooks, catalogs, monographs and collections of scientific articles. They appeared immediately after the museum began operating and are still published today. For the most part, their authors are museum employees.

Specialized studies are divided into natural, archaeological, historical, and ethnographic areas. The topics of such studies are diverse, but they are mainly focused on the analysis of specific exhibits, the development of exhibition catalogs, the study of biographies of famous museum workers, and the process of completing the exhibition fund. Specialized studies appeared in the mid-1920s. Their number especially increased after 2004, which was facilitated by the museum's active publishing activities.

Despite the large number of works devoted to the history and activities of the Poltava Museum of Local Lore, we note the weak development of topics related to the analysis of exhibits of the Department of Nature and the halls of the history of the Poltava region of the 19th–20th centuries. The scientific and professional activities of the museum staff also require further study.
