Scientific and pedagogical heritage of Ivan Ivanovych Belyankin: bibliographic and thematic analysis

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive study of the scientific and pedagogical activities of Ivan Ivanovych Belyankin, a mathematician and educator at the Kharkiv Technological Institute at the beginning of the 20th century. The research aims to systematize, analyze, and, for the first time, fully reconstruct the bibliographic heritage of the scholar. Particular attention is paid to analyzing the content of his works, clarifying thematic emphases, educational and scientific priorities, and exploring the context of his recognition within the academic environment of the Imperial period.

An interdisciplinary approach was employed, combining methods of historical and scientific analysis, bibliographic systematization, content analysis, and elements of prosopographical methodology. Archival collections, pre-revolutionary periodicals, university printing materials, as well as the complete corpus of Belyankin's publications compiled through retrospective bibliographic research, form the primary source base for this study.

The research resulted in identifying and compiling, for the first time, a complete standardized list of the scholar’s printed works, consisting of 36 entries covering the period from 1898 to 1911. These works were classified according to thematic directions: analytical geometry, theoretical mechanics, differential calculus, history of mathematics, problem books and teaching manuals, as well as conference publications. Analysis revealed the high scientific and methodological quality of his works, their orientation towards engineering education, and their close integration within the interdisciplinary discourse between mathematics and engineering sciences. Additionally, the context of Belyankin’s scientific communication was reconstructed, notably his collaboration with Professor V.I. Albitsky, participation in international forums, and contribution to popularizing mathematical knowledge among stude`nts.

This study has filled a significant gap in Ukrainian historiography concerning the figure of Ivan Ivanovych Belyankin and his contribution to the development of mathematical education at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The comprehensive bibliographic inventory of the scholar's works demonstrates the scope of his academic activities and serves as a foundation for further research in the fields of history of mathematics, pedagogy, and higher technical education. The works of Professor Belyankin highlight the strong connection between fundamental science and its applied use in engineering education, thus prompting a reconsideration of his role in shaping the intellectual landscape of higher technical education in the Russian Empire.
