Creations of Earls in the English Peerage System of 1327–1413

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the creation of earldom titles within the English peerage system during the period 1327–1413. The authors aim to explore how the granting of titles influenced the transformation of the English aristocratic structure, what political, social, and legal factors shaped this process, and what role the newly appointed earls played in the internal politics of the kingdom. The research methodology includes historical and comparative analysis, the prosopography approach, elements of genealogical research, and a critical review of primary sources and scholarly literature. The findings indicate that during this period, the title of earl ceased to be an exclusively hereditary privilege of ancient noble families. Instead, it increasingly became a tool of royal policy. Titles were granted as rewards for military service, political loyalty, or marital ties to the royal family. This practice contributed to the emergence of a new wave of aristocracy—individuals who, though not always of noble lineage, played a significant role in governance and administration. A notable trend is the rise in the number of new creations during times of political instability (particularly in 1385 and 1397), suggesting that titles were used to cultivate a loyal circle around the monarch. The authors conclude that the creation of earldoms between 1327 and 1413 was not merely a symbolic act of recognition but part of a broader system of patronage that intertwined political, social, and economic dimensions. These creations were often accompanied by land grants, official appointments, military obligations, and inclusion in the royal ‘affinity’. Thus, the study enhances our understanding of the mechanisms of monarchical power in fourteenth- and early fifteenth-century England and sheds light on the early development of a ‘new aristocracy’— one based not on bloodline, but on service, resources, and political proximity to the crown.
