This article examines the role of the local community as a key actor in the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and the implementation of educational initiatives. Particular attention is paid to the principle of continuity in historical development and the importance of past achievements, which have laid the foundations for contemporary cultural identity. Using the example of the Smyrnovskyi territorial community in the Polohivskyi district of the Zaporizhzhia region, the article analyses practical cases of cooperation between local authorities, cultural institutions and residents aimed at promoting local history.
The author emphasises that decentralisation has created new opportunities for communities to establish their identity through the revival of traditions and the preservation of heritage sites. The article highlights the community’s experience in creating museum exhibitions, organising cultural events and engaging young people in local history activities. It demonstrates that an effective cultural policy within the community not only contributes to the preservation of heritage but also serves as a factor in social cohesion and the development of patriotic consciousness among the population.
This publication represents an interim outcome of our work, as since 3 March 2022, the community has faced new challenges because of the Russian occupation. It has been demonstrated that previous experience in fostering local identity and patriotic consciousness has served as the foundation for social cohesion among residents, even under the extremely difficult conditions of a temporary loss of territorial control. The article emphasises that the cultural heritage of the Smyrnovska community is a strategic resource that ensures the community’s resilience and will form the basis for the future restoration and de-occupation of the region.
