Social and professional adaptation of Ukrainian doctors in the Czech Republic

Abstract

The article comprehensively analyzes the specifics of the situation, adaptation and employment conditions of Ukrainian medical workers in the Czech Republic in the context of large-scale forced migration caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war. The demographic parameters of the Ukrainian community in the country are determined and the growth of its number after February 24, 2022 is justified. The role of refugee doctors is characterized as a significant human resource for overcoming the shortage of specialists in the Czech healthcare system, especially at the level of regional hospitals and pediatric departments.

Particular attention is paid to the regulatory and legal regulation of the integration process. Based on the analysis of the Law of the Czech Republic No. 95/2004 Sb, the multi-stage procedure for verifying diplomas, which includes nostrification and taking a comprehensive approbation exam, is highlighted in detail. The structure of the exam, the number of attempts and the financial aspects of passing it are outlined. Based on statistical data, the dynamics of the involvement of Ukrainian general practitioners, dentists and pharmacists in the Czech medical system were assessed.

Key destructive factors and barriers to passing the approbation were identified, among which the most difficult are the language barrier, mastering specific medical terminology, the high cost of exams and the need to combine training with unskilled labor to ensure livelihoods. Adaptation measures were studied, including free language and preparatory courses, webcasts, psychosocial support programs, as well as successful initiatives (the "Ukraine" project for medical trainees). It was proven that the professional realization of Ukrainian doctors is an important indicator of their social integration and a factor in strengthening interstate ties.
