Advantages and Limitations of Church Organizations in Protestant Communities of Ukraine: A Comparative Analysis of the Baptist, Pentecostal, and Adventist Traditions

Abstract

This article provides a comparative analysis of the organizational models of three leading Protestant denominations in Ukraine Baptist, Pentecostal, and Seventh-day Adventist –across five criteria: authority structure, local congregation autonomy, the role of leadership, missionary effectiveness, and systemic risks. The theoretical framework draws on Max Weberʼs typology of authority (traditional, legal-rational, and charismatic), which allows for a systematic comparison of the organizational principles of the three traditions beyond purely theological discussion. The Baptist model, grounded in congregational autonomy, ensures democratic decision-making and resilience against external pressure, yet carries risks of fragmentation and weaker inter-congregational coordination. The Pentecostal model, built on charismatic leadership and spiritual mobility, exhibits strong missionary dynamism and rapid crisis response, but tends toward personalization of authority and organizational instability upon leadership transitions. The Adventist model, combining a four-level representative structure with an extensive network of educational and medical institutions, demonstrates strategic coherence and effectiveness in long-term humanitarian projects, while remaining vulnerable to bureaucratization and reduced flexibility at the local level. Special attention is paid to the Ukrainian context of full-scale armed aggression (2022–2024), which confronted churches with the urgent need for humanitarian response and a rethinking of their missionary paradigm. The study concludes that no single model is inherently optimal: the effective development of Protestant communities in Ukraine requires a balance between congregational autonomy, accountable leadership, and organizational unity.
