Pastor Ivan Kossovan as an Initiator of the Media Ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Galicia (1980–1995)

Abstract

The article examines the ministry of Pastor Ivan Kosovan as an initiator of the media development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Galicia. Based on archival materials, interviews, and foreign church publications, the study traces his life path from a musician in the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Black Sea Fleet to a devoted church minister. The article analyzes his pastoral work in the Ivano-Frankivsk region during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly the introduction of new methods of missionary activity and the reform of the musical and liturgical tradition. The study highlights Kosovan’s fundraising activity in Canada, through which funds were raised for the construction of a church and the purchase of studio equipment. Special attention is given to his role in establishing the first Protestant radio station, Voice of Hope, which began broadcasting on May 17, 1995, in Ivano-Frankivsk. The article emphasizes his principled position regarding the production of Ukrainian-language content, which he defended before the international leadership of the church. The article also reveals the international dimension of Kosovan’s activity, including his participation in the 1985 General Conference Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in New Orleans and his cooperation with prominent international evangelists. It is shown that the success of the media project was largely determined by the pastor’s constructive collaboration with specialists from the state radio broadcasting system in Ivano-Frankivsk. The study also traces Kosovan’s role as an unofficial representative of Ukrainian Protestantism on the international stage, which contributed to the formation of a positive image of the church abroad and the establishment of partnerships with Canadian communities. The source base of the study consists of archival documents from the State Archives of Ivano-Frankivsk Region, materials from personal interviews with the pastor’s contemporaries, and publications from foreign Adventist periodicals from 1985 to 1996. The article concludes that Ivan Kosovan’s innovative approaches and organizational talent laid a solid foundation for the further media development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in independent Ukraine, while his experience serves as a representative example of combining local church initiative with international support.
