The Activity of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in the Cultural and Educational Life of the Diaspora (1940s–1980s)

Abstract

The need to study the Ukrainian diaspora and its institutions is due to the desire to understand the mechanisms of preserving national identity, cultural identity, and educational traditions in the context of the life of Ukrainians outside the Motherland. The purpose of the article is to analyze the activity of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) in the cultural and educational life of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada from the 1940s to the 1980s. Methods. The study uses theoretical methods (analysis, synthesis, abstraction, induction, deduction) and empirical methods (description). Research results. It is noted that the UCC was established at the first organizational meetings held on November 7–8, 1940, in Winnipeg, bringing together members of the Brotherhood of Ukrainian Catholics (BUC), the Union of Ukrainian Independents (UUI), the Ukrainian National Association (UNA), the Union of Hetmanist Statesmen of Canada (UHSC), and the Union of Ukrainian Organizations (UUO). One of the central tasks of the newly formed organization was to conduct cultural and educational work within the Ukrainian community in Canada. From its inception, the UCC actively focused on the preservation and development of Ukrainian culture, literature, art, and education, establishing archives, libraries, museums, galleries, and publishing houses. The Congress initiated numerous cultural projects, including exhibitions, concerts, festivals, school textbook publications and translations, as well as supporting the creation of artistic associations such as the Ukrainian Society of Visual Artists, the Councils of Ukrainian Art, and the Ukrainian Music Society of Alberta. Its activities encompassed the promotion of Ukrainian cultural heritage at both national and international levels, the commemoration of historical figures, the preservation of military and Cossack traditions, and the involvement of leading diaspora figures in cultural and educational initiatives.

Particular attention was given to the UCC’s coordination and financial activities, especially through the creation and support of charitable foundations such as the Taras Shevchenko Foundation and numerous specialized scholarship and artistic funds. These initiatives enabled the Congress to provide systematic funding for cultural, educational, and scholarly projects, facilitate access to government subsidies, and coordinate interprovincial activities among Ukrainian community centers. Over several decades, the UCC not only shaped the organizational structure of the Ukrainian community in Canada but also laid the foundation for its cultural identity, promoting the representation of Ukrainian creative achievements and historical memory in both national and international contexts.
