Moral Aspects of Sport in the Conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian War

Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the moral challenges facing contemporary sport in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. It examines the transformation of sport as a socio-cultural phenomenon that goes beyond the traditional perception of political neutrality and becomes increasingly integrated into global political and humanitarian contexts. Sport is analyzed as an instrument of international communication, state image-building, and a means of drawing the international community’s attention to the issues of war, violence, and human rights violations.

Particular attention is paid to the moral and ethical aspects of athletes’ participation in international competitions under conditions of armed conflict. The study explores the problem of individual and collective responsibility of athletes, as well as the role of the state in shaping sports policy and using sport as an instrument of propaganda. The main ethical dilemmas related to the participation of representatives of an aggressor state in international sporting events are outlined, particularly in the context of the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and justice. The article also analyzes the activities of international sports organizations that have faced the need to make complex decisions combining sporting, political, and moral dimensions. It is determined that in times of war sport acquires new functions — symbolic, diplomatic, and value-oriented – becoming a platform for the expression of national identity, solidarity, and civic position.

The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comprehensive understanding of the moral dimension of contemporary sport through the prism of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the concepts of individual and collective responsibility. The article proposes an approach to understanding sport not only as a sphere of competition, but also as an ethical and political space within which social values and international narratives are formed. The study also clarifies the meaning of the concept of the “neutrality” of sport in conditions of armed conflict and substantiates the necessity of forming a new ethical framework for the functioning of the international sports environment. It is concluded that there is a need to reconsider the ethical foundations of contemporary sport and to develop new approaches to ensuring justice, humanism, and responsibility in the international sports community.
