Abstract

The relevance of the study lies in the fact that until now there has been no detailed picture of the travels of Ukrainians from Europe to North America after the end of World War II. At the same time, the first personal diary of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn is being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, which allows us to learn interesting details. The purpose of the work is to research and analyze the journey of the future scientist Bohdan Hawrylyshyn (1926–2016) from Germany to Canada in 1947, and to recreate it in as much detail as possible based on his memories, interviews, diary, and museum materials. The methodological basis of the article is the principles of objectivity, historicism, and continuity. The work uses methods of comparison and juxtaposition of information from various sources, analysis and synthesis, retrospective, problem-chronological, and typology. The results showed that this trip took place one month earlier than previously thought and lasted eight days. Young Bohdan Hawrylyshyn actively participated in public life, in particular, he initiated the publication of the Ukrainian newspaper "On the Waves of the Ocean", which was published twice using the Latin alphabet. The future scientist and educational leader showed organizational and leadership skills, taking a proactive position and actively interacting with the officers specially accompanying them and representatives of the company that invited them to work in Canada. Almost all the time he acted as a translator, knowing English at a sufficient level. The number of Ukrainians on the ship was 116 out of 1,150 passengers. The practical significance of the results lies in the possibility of using them as a model for seeing the path of post-war emigration of Ukrainians from Europe to Canada, understanding their specifics and peculiarities.
