Abstract

The history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Ukrainian lands constitutes an organic component of the broader national historical process and vividly reflects the complex socio-political and church–state transformations from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. The path traversed by this community demonstrates a dramatic evolution from the status of a marginalized foreign sect” and a persecuted underground movement to the establishment of an influential national denomination that has become an active participant in the building of contemporary civil society. The article presents a comprehensive retrospective analysis of the formation, development, and institutional evolution of Ukrainian Adventism from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. The author proposes a detailed periodization of the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ukrainian lands, distinguishing the imperial, interwar, Soviet, and post-Soviet stages, each characterized by distinctive models of interaction with the state. The study examines in detail the process by which the Church moved from the status of a marginalized «foreign sect» to that of an influential national denomination. Particular attention is devoted to the tragic Soviet period: the article reveals the mechanisms of state terror, the physical destruction of the church elite in the 1930s, and the emergence of heroic underground resistance in the form of the movement of the «True and Free Seventh-day Adventists» under the leadership of V. Shelkov. The scholarly novelty of the study lies in its analysis of the transformation of the missionary paradigm from a purely eschatological warning to active social ministry in independent Ukraine. The article also highlights the role of such contemporary institutions as the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Hope Media Group, and the humanitarian agency ADRA Ukraine, which has become a key actor in providing assistance to the population during recent socio-political crises. The author concludes that the resilience of the denomination rests on the combination of an unwavering doctrinal core, including the metanarrative of the «Great Controversy» and Sabbath observance, with a high degree of adaptability to the challenges of globalization and postmodernity.
