The purpose of the study is to clarify the specifics, the main moral and ethical aspects of the problem of patriotism and social responsibility of a scientist in the context of the realities of Ukrainian society of the 21st century.
Methods. The axiological method was used to substantiate moral values and patriotism as the foundation of a scientist's professional activity. The existential approach was used to analyze the existence of a scientist in boundary situations of war and work under constant risks. The anthropological method allowed us to explore the personality of a scientist through the categories of social responsibility and national mission. The socio-philosophical analysis was used to determine the role of science as a form of national self-awareness and a tool for state formation. The dialectical method made it possible to trace the connection between the individual ethical choice of a scientist and global scientific progress.
Results. It is substantiated that the moral values that underlie the activities of a scientist are the foundation of his successful professional development. In times of war, a Ukrainian scientist acquires a special status - he becomes an active participant in the process of state building.
It is emphasized that the modern academic and startup environment is a platform for such advanced research, where the patriotic desire to develop Ukrainian science becomes a more important factor in development than the material base. Ukrainian scientific achievements are of global importance, as they are based on the unique empirical experience of development in conditions of constant military threats and risks.
It is found that Ukrainian science is a unique product of the development of the Ukrainian nation. Patriotism in various spheres of its social manifestation is an existentially important component of the existence of the Ukrainian nation.
Conclusions. Scientists must have a sense of social responsibility and awareness of the national mission. A sense of social responsibility should be manifested through duty to the state and the people. Awareness of the mission of a scientist during wartime is the highest value dimension of patriotism – the ability to work in difficult circumstances to preserve science as a form of national self-awareness and public good.
