Abstract

This article examines the parliamentary activities of Longyn Tsehelsky as a deputy of the Austrian parliament and ambassador to the Galician Sejm. It is noted that the number of Ukrainians in representative legislative structures in different periods was not the same. L. Tsehelsky joined the active political struggle and realized the need to find and expand the circle of political like-minded people who could not only substantiate the idea of independence for Ukraine in a historical context, but also fight for its implementation.

The purpose of the study is the participation of L. Tsehelsky in the public and political life of Galicia at the beginning of the 20th century, as a deputy of the Reichsrat and the Galician Sejm. The methodological basis of this publication is the principles of historicism and scientific objectivity, systematicity, and comprehensiveness. In solving the tasks indicated by us, such general scientific and special scientific research methods as historiographic analysis, logical, problem-chronological, descriptive, and biographical methods were used.

The political activity of L. Tsehelsky as an active figure of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party is highlighted. His parliamentary work as a member of the Vienna Parliament and the Galician Sejm in the conditions of the functioning of Western Ukraine in the legal field of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy is considered. The emphasis is on his clear civic position, rhetorical abilities, criticism of the policy of the imperial government, speeches against Galician Muscoviteism and protection of the social and national rights of the Ukrainian peasantry.

His public and political activity and contribution to the implementation of the national idea, the establishment of the cultural and educational life of the region are recreated.
