The Role of the Ukrainian Cossacks in the Formation of Statehood and Cultural Identity: A Historical Retrospective

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse the Cossacks' historical role in forming Ukrainian statehood and cultural identity. To achieve this goal, the following methods were used: historical (to study the origin and stages of development of the Ukrainian Cossacks), systematic (to analyse the Cossacks as a social phenomenon, its structure, functions and place in Ukrainian society), comparative (to assess the impact of the Cossacks on the development of state institutions and national consciousness) and the method of generalisation. The study results indicate that the Ukrainian Cossacks were a separate population stratum, widespread in the XV-XVIII centuries. A detailed analysis of the historical factors that contributed to its emergence, including economic, social, political, national-religious and military factors, is carried out. It is established that the Cossacks performed a military function and significantly contributed to the formation of statehood. Successful military campaigns of the late 16th and early 17th centuries contributed to the Cossacks' awareness of their strength and importance for the Ukrainian people, which allowed them to occupy an essential place in the political life of that time.

The history of the formation of Ukrainian statehood was inextricably linked to the process of its international recognition. Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (1596-1657) played a significant role in representing Ukraine on the world stage. Ukraine's national identity is closely linked to the cultural traditions of the Ukrainian Cossacks, which reflect its unique history and way of life. The Cossack era enriched Ukrainian culture by creating numerous historical and everyday songs and dumas. The Cossacks significantly contributed to the development of Ukrainian choreographic art: Cossack dances have become a vivid reflection of their warrior spirit, traditions and social order.

The conclusions note that the Cossacks have become a symbol of Ukrainian history and continue to inspire the modern generation. Their heritage remains an important cultural symbol that retains its significance in modern Ukrainian society, conveying the values of patriotism, freedom, and national unity.
