Homosexual relationships and male prostitution in ancient society

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze same-sex relationships and male prostitution as components of social and cultural life in ancient society, using the examples of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The study aims to highlight the views of ancient civilizations on male sexuality, gender roles, social status, and acceptable forms of intimate relationships. The work combines an analysis of ancient written sources, in particular the works of Plato, Plutarch, Petronius, and Suetonius, with the findings of contemporary historians, philosophers, and social researchers, allowing the issue to be considered in a broad interdisciplinary context.

Particular attention is paid to same-sex relationships in Ancient Greece, where they were considered not only as a form of sexual behavior, but also as an important element of education, socialization of youth, and the formation of civic and military virtues. The phenomenon of pederasty as a socially sanctioned practice associated with the transfer of experience between generations is analyzed, as well as the role of such relationships in the aristocracy and military communities. It is shown that in Greek society, age, status, and role differences between partners were important in determining the moral evaluation of relationships.

The article also examines the specifics of the Roman approach to same-sex practices, which was based on a rigid social hierarchy and a clear distinction between active and passive sexual roles. A separate section of the study is devoted to male prostitution as a legalized, institutionalized, and economically significant phenomenon, widespread in both Greek polis and Roman cities. Its social scale, legal regulation, participation of different segments of the population, and society's attitude toward persons involved in this sphere are analyzed.

Overall, the work demonstrates that same-sex relationships and male prostitution in antiquity were multidimensional phenomena closely linked to the cultural norms, power mechanisms, and social structure of the societies of that time, and played a significant role in shaping ancient ideas about sexuality and morality.
