Formation of the historical culture of youth in a media-dependent society

Abstract

In modern society, where the media plays a leading role in everyday communication, the problem of shaping the historical culture of young people in conditions of media dependence is becoming particularly relevant. The purpose of this article is to study the process of forming historical culture among young people in a media-dependent society, to determine the influence of the media on the perception of history, and to develop recommendations for improving the effectiveness of historical education among the younger generation. To achieve this goal, a set of theoretical methods was used, such as analysis, synthesis, abstraction, induction, and deduction, as well as empirical approaches, in particular observation and description. The results of the study showed that different media formats significantly influence young people’s perception of historical events and figures, with each format shaping perceptions of the past in a specific way that can either promote or hinder the development of historical culture. The main difficulties faced by young people are related to information overload, which leads to superficial assimilation of material and loss of concentration, as well as the influence of disinformation and manipulative narratives that shape false perceptions and emotional perceptions of history. Declining trust in scientific sources and a lack of critical analysis skills create additional obstacles to the acquisition of historical knowledge. The article offers practical recommendations for educators and parents, including the integration of media resources into the educational process, the development of critical thinking, and the organization of research activities. A comprehensive approach to shaping the historical culture of young people, which combines active discussion of historical topics with conscious media consumption, contributes to a deeper understanding of past events and the development of analytical skills. The conclusions of the study emphasize the importance of understanding the social and cultural context, which allows not only to comprehend the past, but also to form a stable civic position
