Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of two offensive operations carried out in the Kharkiv region: the German counteroperation “Фрідерікус-Південь” in May 1942 and the Slobozhansk offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in September 2022. The analysis covers a number of key parameters: goals, operational tasks, pace and duration, spatial scope, balance of forces, nature of training, tactical features, use of terrain, technological level of weapons and military equipment of the parties, as well as achieved results. Both common features (achieving operational surprise, concentration of efforts on critical areas and directions, striving for a radical change in the configuration of the front) and significant differences due to the state of development of military art, technological evolution of weapons and military equipment have been established. Operation “Фрідерікус-Південь” was an example of the classic German approach to conducting offensive (counteroffensive) operations with the aim of encircling and destroying the Soviet grouping on the Kharkiv salient, while the Slobozhansk offensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is an example of a modern operation implemented in conditions of quantitative superiority of the enemy. Among the factors that in such conditions enabled the operation were the following: high-quality personnel training, the use of high-precision weapons, and the proper organization of intelligence and information warfare. The comparison allowed us to identify a number of military-historical lessons that are relevant for the implementation in practice of training and conducting operations by groups of troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in modern conditions. In particular, it was proven that the ability to adaptive maneuver, synchronization of efforts of different types and branches of troops and effective use of modern technologies can compensate for the lack of resources. The study emphasizes the importance of preparation, morale, logistics, and team initiative for achieving success in conditions of asymmetry. Also, as a result of the study, the author clarified the content of the Slobozhansk operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2022, which, in its essential features, was offensive, not counteroffensive, as many authors previously claimed.
