The article analyzes patronage as a phenomenon inherent in Ukrainian culture during the Renaissance, focusing on its significance for the educational, spiritual, and public spheres, as well as for defending national identity, which was subject to political and religious oppression. Patronage actively supported art, science, and education, helping to shape the cultural environment's basic principles based on humanism. Patrons of the Ukrainian Renaissance sought to meet social needs with their resources, developing, for example, book printing or financing educational institutions and spiritual centers.
The study outlines the main features of the Ukrainian Renaissance, showing the stages of worldview transformation, the evolutionary formation of humanistic values, and the active development of cultural practices that differed from those of Europe as a whole and preserved our national identity. The patronage activities of V.-K. Ostrozky, H. Hulevychivna, and P. Konashevych-Sahaidachny are described. Their support for basic educational initiatives, church and community projects, and printing was called the foundation for the development of Ukrainian culture, which guaranteed its endurance and resilience in the face of external pressure, which it constantly felt. Specific examples showed that patrons not only enriched the cultural space but also helped to preserve Ukrainian identity and our national self-awareness.
The multifaceted nature of patronage during the Renaissance, encompassing educational, cultural, spiritual, and social aspects, was emphasized. Active patronage support for Ukrainian culture was demonstrated, which helped it to recover, develop, and form a recognizable national and cultural tradition over many centuries.
The research employs impartiality and objectivity by remaining neutral and unbiased in its approach. The article uses analysis, synthesis, and generalization. They helped analyze the essence of Renaissance patronage. The comparative method allowed us to compare the European and Ukrainian Renaissance. With its help, the philanthropic activities of V.-K. Ostrozky, H. Hulevychivna, and P. Konashevych-Sahaidachny were investigated. The biographical method and case study contributed to the identification of the ideas and actions of patrons from the 16th to 17th centuries, and their connection to the historical context. Thanks to historical and cultural interdisciplinary methods, the essence of the Renaissance and its features were investigated.
The study concludes that Renaissance Ukrainian patronage is interpreted not only as an instrument of financial support, but also as a crucial factor in shaping the culture and identity of our society.
