Abstract

This article is dedicated to the study of the life and scientific-practical activities of Adolf Karl Heinrich Slaby (1849–1913), one of the pioneers of electrical engineering education and the development of electrical technology at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The study provides a detailed analysis of Slaby’s early life, his education in Berlin and Jena, and the influence of teachers and mentors on the formation of his scientific and professional interests, as well as his initial steps in teaching and scientific experimentation. Significant attention is given to Slaby’s work at the Royal Industrial Academy and the Technical University in Charlottenburg, where he initiated the establishment of the first Department of Electrical Engineering, integrating theoretical instruction with practical experiments. Particular attention is paid to the role of A. Slaby in founding electrical engineering associations, including the Electro-Technical Society (ETV) and the Association of German Electrical Engineers (VDE). The article describes his collaboration with the leading specialists of the time, including Werner von Siemens and Emil Rathenau, and also highlights the support of Kaiser Wilhelm II in his research. The study examines Slaby’s contribution to the development of radio technology and wireless communication, particularly his experiments with antennas and long-distance signal transmission, which in some cases preceded the achievements of Guglielmo Marconi. His pedagogical activities and organizational initiatives aimed at training qualified engineers, which influenced the field of electrical engineering not only in Germany but worldwide, are also analyzed. The article emphasizes that A. Slaby actively worked to disseminate knowledge among students. His lectures and experimental demonstrations were highly popular among students and colleagues. Through his efforts, electrical engineering became an essential component of Europe’s technical and scientific potential at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The results of the study allow Adolf Slaby to be assessed not only as an outstanding scientist and educator but also as an organizer of the electrical engineering community, a mentor to young specialists, and a consultant to the highest state institutions. This article may be of interest to historians of science and technology, educators, engineers, and a broader audience interested in the development of electrical engineering and the history of technical education.
