Abstract

The purpose of the study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the strategic significance of the Kharkiv axis during the spring campaign of 1942, with a focus on the planning, objectives, operational decisions, and miscalculations of both opposing sides – the USSR and Nazi Germany.

The article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the events of the spring campaign of 1942 on the Kharkiv axis, which became one of the most dramatic episodes of the Soviet-German war. The study examines the strategic plans and tactical decisions of the opposing sides, traces their mutual influence, and defines the place of the Kharkiv offensive operation within the broader context of combat operations on the Eastern Front. Particular attention is devoted to the preconditions for the formation of the Soviet Barvinkove salient, as well as to the miscalculations of the Soviet command, in particular the underestimation of the threat to the flanks and the overestimation of its own offensive capabilities. The article reveals the causes of the operation’s failure: insufficient reconnaissance, weak coordination between the fronts, problems with logistical support, and the strategic adventurism of the high command. The German counteroffensive «Fridericus-1» is examined, which resulted in the encirclement and destruction of a significant grouping of the Red Army, leading to the loss of more than two hundred thousand servicemen, one thousand tanks, and a considerable amount of artillery. Emphasis is placed on the large-scale consequences of the defeat: the loss of initiative on the southern flank of the front, the opening of pathways for the implementation of the German «Blau» plan, which led to the occupation of the Donbas, the advance to the Volga, and the unfolding of the Battle of Stalingrad. Soviet, post-Soviet, and Western historiographical approaches are highlighted, which gradually shifted from ideologized assessments to critical and objective analysis. It is emphasized that despite the catastrophic consequences, the Kharkiv operation became an important experience for the Soviet war machine, stimulating a rethinking of strategic approaches to the planning of offensive actions. The conclusion is drawn that the events of the spring of 1942 on the Kharkiv axis not only determined the course of military operations in the second half of 1942, but also laid the foundations for the transformation of Soviet strategic thought, which subsequently became the basis for the victorious operations of 1943-1945. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of operational planning miscalculations during the early Soviet operations of the German-Soviet War.
