Medical and public activity of Sylvester Drymalyk

Abstract

The article examines the figure of a famous Ukrainian doctor late 19^th – early 20^th century Sylvester Drymalyk, who lived and worked on Zhovkva and Lviv. The purpose of the article is a comprehensive and social activities of Sylvester Drymalyk. In the preparing the work, we used a complex of general scientific methods – historical, chronological, comparative, synthesis and analysis, adhered to the principles of historicism and scientificity. The use of different methods and wide source base allowed to reveal the purpose of the study, to obtain relevant results and draw conclusions. Sylvester Drymalyk’s medical work in various Ukrainian institutions was analyzed in detail – Zhovkva city doctor, member of the medical commission of the T. Shevchenko Scientific Society, co-founder and director of the Ukrainian Medical Society, doctor and director of the People’s Hospital in Lviv. Particular attention is paid to the scientific work of the doctor, in particular, his publication of several medical manuals for a wide range of patients. His participation in public life was clarified, namely: the establishment and support of the People’s House cooperative in Zhovkva, Prosvita cells, reading rooms and the Orphanage for Military Orphans in Lviv. It has been proven that Sylvester Drymalyk was a recognized representative of the Ukrainian intelligentsia in Galicia in the late 19^th  and early 20^thcenturies, who was actively engaged not only in medical practice, but also in educational and public work, supporting Ukrainian institutions – the “Prosvita” society, reading rooms, and cooperatives. The scientific novelty of the study lies in its complexity, as we present various aspects of the life and activities of the Ukrainian doctor Sylvester Drymalyk, his role and place in the development of Ukrainian medicine and society.
