Sufism as a fractal structure of consciousness: analysis through frame theory and the Fibonacci sequence

An interdisciplinary approach is applied in this study to examine Sufism as a spiritual-cognitive system viewed through the lens of the fractal theory of consciousness. The analysis is conducted using conceptual tools from frame theory (cognitive linguistics) and numerical proportions (specifically, the Fibonacci sequence). The study proposes an interpretation of Sufism as a fractal structure of consciousness, a novel approach in both the philosophy of religion and the philosophy of consciousness.
A cognitive model for analyzing Sufism is proposed, based on frame theory, which allows Sufism to be interpreted as an alternative paradigm for perceiving transcendent experience. A new interdisciplinary vision of religious consciousness is substantiated, in which sensory mystical experiences are viewed as complex cognitive-ontological structures that exhibit principles of self-organization.
The aim of this study is to reveal the functioning of Sufi consciousness as a fractal system, where each state (frame), symbol (sequence), or ritual not only belongs to a local mystical context but also reflects higher universal principles.
Methodology: The research is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that integrates methods from religious studies, cognitive science, mathematical metaphorics (particularly fractal geometry), and textual hermeneutics. The hermeneutic analysis of classical Sufi texts (notably the works of Jalal al-Din Rumi, Farid al-Din Attar, and Hafez Shirazi) is conducted with consideration of their cultural, religious, and symbolic contexts.
Sufism was interpreted as an alternative frame of perceiving the transcendent, distinct from orthodox Islam in its emphasis on love, intuition, symbolism, and inner transformation. A comparative model was introduced, grounded in fractal geometry (Benoit Mandelbrot) and the Fibonacci sequence, employed as metaphorical tools for describing the nonlinear, self-organizing, and self-similar nature of Sufi consciousness.
The analysis includes a modeling of the structure of the mystical path as a fractal unfolding, where each station (maqām) or state (ḥāl) mirrors the essential features of the entire system at a deeper or higher level of experience.
A comparative exploration was carried out between mystical concepts in Sufism and various philosophical and scientific models of consciousness, including ontology, structures of thinking, the phenomenology of experience, and parallels with Ukrainian cordocentrism, highlighting the universality of fractal thinking as a tool for describing reality.
Attention is also given to the potential risks of introducing mathematical terminology into the humanities discourse. Fractality and numerical sequences are examined as heuristic metaphors that support a renewed understanding of spiritual practice, rather than as strict mathematical models.
This methodological approach not only deepens the interpretation of Sufism as a mystical tradition, but also contributes to shaping a new analytical perspective on consciousness as a multidimensional, mosaic and self-similar process, open to infinite spiritual development.
