The impact of the metaverse on the transformation of ethical norms in society

Abstract

The rapid development of the metaverse as an interactive digital environment that combines virtual reality, immersive technologies, and social interaction necessitates a profound rethinking of ethical norms in society. The virtualization of everyday experience, the multiplicity of digital identities, and the algorithmization of interaction are forming a new moral paradigm that requires theoretical reflection and practical guidance. In this context, the study of the transformation of ethical guidelines that arise in digital realities is of particular importance. The purpose of the article is to analyze the transformation of ethical norms in the context of the development of the metaverse as an interactive digital environment that combines elements of virtual reality, immersive technologies, and social interaction. The study also aims to understand the changes taking place under the influence of the virtualization of everyday life and the digitalization of identity. An interdisciplinary approach was used, involving ethical, philosophical, sociocultural, and informational analysis. The methodological basis is comparative analysis, the structural-functional method, and the interpretation of digital practices through the prism of moral categories. The results show that the formation of ethical norms in the metaverse is characterized by increased variability and dependence on algorithms and the conditions of a particular platform. The peculiarities of digital identity, which in virtual space acquires multidimensionality and anonymity, leading to the redefinition of concepts such as responsibility, privacy, and empathy, are highlighted. A comparative analysis of ethical categories in traditional society and the metaverse environment was carried out, revealing qualitative shifts in attitudes toward moral norms and standards. As a result, a model of ethical coexistence has been formed that takes into account individual, communicative, and technological levels of influence. The conclusions summarize that the change in the ethical landscape in the metaverse is not only a challenge but also an opportunity to form a new system of moral coordinates. The developed model of ethical coexistence can serve as a basis for formulating practical recommendations for regulating user behavior in digital environments. The results of the study are of great theoretical and practical importance for ethics, sociology, digital humanities, and digital security policy.
