Abstract

In the context of social polarization, information manipulation, and a crisis of trust in institutions, critical thinking assumes special significance as a tool for fostering a mature civic consciousness. The growing challenges of today’s world require the development of individuals capable of deep analysis, reflection, and conscious decision-making within a complex social environment. Objective. This study aims to theoretically substantiate the role of critical thinking in the process of forming civic consciousness as an integrative characteristic of a personality capable of reflective judgment, deliberate social choice, and active participation in public life. Methods. The research methods include structural-functional analysis, comparative-analytical approach, systematization of scientific sources, and conceptual modeling. Results. Critical thinking is examined as a key factor in the cognitive and axiological transformation of the individual, contributing to the development of an internally motivated civic stance. The study provides a critical review of scholarly approaches to the concepts of “critical thinking” and “civic consciousness”, outlines institutional and personal factors of civic formation, and identifies the stages, mechanisms, and conditions for developing a reflective and value-oriented civic identity. An algorithm for shaping civic consciousness through critical thinking is proposed, along with a conceptual model of their interconnection and analysis of the components that link these two phenomena. Conclusions. It is proven that critical thinking serves not only as a cognitive resource but also as a catalyst for personal maturity, responsibility, and readiness to engage in democratic life. The proposed model has potential for application in educational systems, youth development, and social policy. Future research may focus on the empirical validation of the model, its adaptation to various age and sociocultural contexts, and the development of methodological tools to foster critical thinking in the context of civic education.
