Abstract

Linguistic inclusion is becoming increasingly important in contemporary public discourse as it contributes to the reflection and recognition of social diversity. Using inclusive language helps to reduce prejudice, avoid discrimination, and support equality between different social groups, mainly based on gender, gender identity, ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc.

This study aims to examine the impact of language inclusion on supporting social equality in public discourse. Inclusive language is essential in combating discrimination, as it recognises and reflects social diversity, promotes respect, and reduces inequality among different social groups.

The study is based on a qualitative analysis of linguistic strategies for creating an inclusive language environment. Content analysis of examples from the media, official documents and educational materials was used to demonstrate gender-neutral vocabulary, avoidance of stereotypes and adaptation of vocabulary to different cultural contexts. The study also analyses linguistic approaches in French, Ukrainian and English to ensure inclusivity.

Results. The main strategies of inclusive language include: 1) gender-neutral constructions that reduce gender bias by replacing traditional terms with neutral ones, such as ‘participants in the learning process’ instead of ‘students’; 2) correct vocabulary that avoids discriminatory or stigmatising terms;  3) adapting language to cultural differences allows for maintaining respect for cultural diversity in public discourse.

Conclusions. Inclusive language plays a vital role in public discourse as a means of social transformation. The use of gender-neutral and culturally adapted vocabulary and the avoidance of stereotypes contribute to forming a more just and diverse society. Inclusion-oriented linguistic strategies help create a discourse supporting social equality, allowing everyone to feel visible and adequately represented.
