Abstract

There is the historical trajectory of the Khrystoforov family as a case of the transformation of the Ukrainian Cossack elite into the Russian imperial nobility during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is examined in this article. Following the incorporation of Ukrainian lands into the Russian Empire, the former Cossack elite faced a strategic choice between the loss of social status and legal privileges, on the one hand, and integration into imperial administrative, military, and estate-based structures, on the other.

Drawing on archival sources and genealogical reconstruction, the article traces the origins of the Khrystoforov family and analyzes the process of their ennoblement and inclusion in the genealogical registers of the nobility of the Katerynoslav Province. Particular attention is paid to mechanisms of social adaptation, including military and civil service, landownership, as well as participation in the economic development and colonization of Southern Ukraine.

For the first time, the study offers a comprehensive genealogical reconstruction of the Khrystoforov family based on archival materials from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This approach makes it possible to examine not only the formal stages of ennoblement but also long-term family strategies of social adaptation, career advancement, and economic activity within the framework of the Russian Empire. Special attention is given to the activities of Vasyl Khrystoforov as a noble landowner who successfully transformed his estate into a profitable enterprise both before and after the abolition of serfdom in 1861.

The study demonstrates that the history of the Khrystoforov family reflects broader patterns of elite integration, social mobility, and pragmatic motivations that shaped the behavior of the former Cossack nobility within the imperial context. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the social history of Ukrainian elites and the complex processes of adaptation and transformation under imperial rule.
