The purpose of the study is to analyse the scientific works of outstanding graduates of the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Vladimir University – M. Vladimirsky-Budanov, D. Bagaliy, E. Tarle, and I. Ogienko. Methodologically, the article is based on the principles of historicism, objectivism, and systematicity. Analytical, descriptive, and comparative-historical research methods were used in the work. The relevance of this article is due to the introduction into scientific circulation of a number of unpublished manuscripts stored in the State Archives of Kyiv. The historiographical novelty of the topic lies in the systematisation and comprehensive analysis of previously little-studied student works, the identification of their historiographical potential as sources for studying the formation of historiography, the development of scientific schools and personal views of future historians, and the creation of a new interpretation of the history of university historical education through the prism of the works of outstanding graduates, showing the influence of early works on their further careers and the development of historical science in general. This made it possible to determine the scientific interests of the above-mentioned historians during their student years, establish their level of professional training, and trace the influence of their scientific supervisors on the formation of their scientific worldview. It has been determined that under the guidance of renowned university professors, namely V. Antonovich, I. Luchitsky, and V. Perets, young researchers wrote scientific works devoted to issues of Ukrainian and world history. Some of these works (M. Vladimirsky-Budanov, E. Tarle) were written at a high scientific level and were awarded medals or received favorable reviews from scientific supervisors. Certain provisions of the candidate theses of M. Vladimirsky-Budanov, E. Tarle, and I. Ogienko have not lost their relevance today. It has been proven that the topics of the student works of all these young researchers were continued in their scientific research during their professional careers.
